Cedar Point News:

Planet Snoopy ready for orbit?

April 9, 2008

By Annie Zelm, The Sandusky Register

A new planet is in the works, with children at the center of its universe.

Planet Snoopy, the latest attraction at Cedar Point, is scheduled to debut when the park opens May 10.

“Our focus is really on families this year,” said spokesman Bryan Edwards during a tour of the area. “Typically, when you hear Cedar Point, you think big, tall, fast roller coasters ... but as a parent, nothing is more fun than riding with your son or daughter on the rides and seeing their excitement.”

The new child’s area, the fourth child-friendly spot at the park, is specially designed for little ones who may have outgrown the tamer train rides or merry-go-rounds yet aren’t quite tall enough for the big coasters.

“It’s the next stepping stone in the thrill experience, so to speak,” Edwards said.

Planet Snoopy will feature seven rides ” a miniature teacup-style ride, miniature train, 4 x 4 trucks, a bouncing tower, spinning balloons, rocket ships and a crazy submarine ride.

The 1.25-acre playground will also have games, themed decor showcasing Snoopy’s travels throughout the world and live appearances by the Peanuts’ characters.

Families can take a closer look at Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty and others during “Snoopy’s Big Bow Wow On Ice” in the Good Time Theatre. One of four new shows this year, the performance highlights 14 world-class skaters.

After a day of trekking through the park, families can retreat to Planet Snoopy’s colorful new cafe, with larger-than-life-sized Peanuts’ comic strips plastered on its walls. A child-centered menu with a small adult section promises to cater to even the pickiest eaters.

A First Aid center with changing stations and a quiet area designated for nursing mothers are other staples that make for a family-oriented atmosphere.

Construction began in October and is now in its final stages with about a month to go.

The renovation of the former Peanuts’ Playground into Planet Snoopy is part of approximately $5.2 million in capital improvements park officials are completing for the 139th season.

Other improvements include a $3 million upgrade to the Sandcastle Suites Hotel, which features a revamped lobby and registration area, upgraded suites and rest rooms and newly decorated hallways.

Located on the tip of the Cedar Point Peninsula, Sandcastle Suites has 187 guest suites, including three Grand Vista Suites that include an indoor Jacuzzi and a wraparound deck or patio. The hotel also includes an outdoor pool and whirlpool spa, tennis courts, a gazebo, scenic boardwalk and shuttle service to the park gates.
